ARTIST STATEMENT

My name is Gregory James Bustillo and I am an artist who works primarily in drawing. This series of digital and mixed media drawings that I have created explores the beauty of the nude male. In my process of creation I first begin by searching for a reference photo or using an image that I have on file. Then with my iPad 12PRO I digitally draw a simplified line version of the image. After I created the digital drawing, I printed it out on 11 x 8.5 inch printer paper, then I colored in the printed digital drawing with flesh tone and regular colored crayons. finally I drew over the printed outlines of the drawing in regular and fine point sharpie markers. Once the drawing is completed I plan for future framing and also use that drawing as a reference picture for a larger version of that drawing done in pencil, prismacolor pencils, & sharpie in a large sketch pad. Although this digital process of creation for a drawing is new to me, I believe that this series of work communicates the beauty of the male body. These drawings exist by the relationship between the artist and technology, moving towards the future and escaping the mutations of the past. These drawings can challenge the viewer to see the male nude as aggressive, playful, and sensual. My drawings reference the artists Robert Mapplethorpe, Tom of Finland, and the ancient male nude statues in Rome, although their approach to depicting the nude male is different from mine, I believe the commonality in their work and mine is showing the beauty of the naked male body.
